Development of the next LEED rating system version will begin in January 2023. It will be guided by the Future of LEED Principles, which were developed after months of conversations with the global LEED community. CAGBC staff, committees, and members actively participated in this consultation process, and we look forward to continuing dialogue with the goal of shaping the evolution of LEED.

Maintaining a holistic rating system requires periodic review of the latest market capabilities, priorities, and expectations. CAGBC staff are particularly excited about the opportunities to better address operational and embodied carbon, as well as adaptation and resiliency. LEED v5 also provides an opportunity to ensure we consider the breadth and complexity of credit requirements, trimming and simplifying where it makes sense.

The pace of development is going to be rapid and the goal is to release a draft in 2023.

While LEED v5 development forges ahead and important updates to the LEED v4 energy requirements are already available for public comment, the LEED v4.1 rating system is being left as a beta and will not go to ballot, allowing staff and volunteers to put all their energies towards LEED v5.
