On day two of Building Lasting Change 2024, our Technical Stream is packed with insightful presentations and panels that you won’t want to miss. Below we’re featuring two presentations that offer unique and high-impact considerations to reduce carbon in new and existing buildings.

Forging the Path to Steel Circularity: From Design to Policy

Explore steel reuse in construction with this interactive panel discussion, featuring experts from across the value-chain.

Capture lessons learned from a structural engineer and contractor’s perspectives on employing steel reuse on Canada’s largest, most complex rehabilitation project: the Centre Block Project in Ottawa.

Building from these lessons learned and technical reflection, the panel will explore the different policy incentives and how to design for steel reuse now, such as considerations for owners, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders. Audience participation will be encouraged!

MURB Whole-Building Lifecycle Carbon Solutions

This presentation will review a case study of a MURB using detailed embodied and operational analysis for whole-building life cycle carbon. While embodied and operational carbon have been studied individually by many consultants and designers, they have rarely been combined.

The case study looks at differences in operational and embodied carbon in three different Canadian locations to review the alternate priorities projects may face with differing utility costs and grid emissions factors. Using EQ’s extensive experience with MURBs, a subset of popular envelope types, mechanical systems, and structural options will be evaluated to determine what simple measures each project should be incorporating into their designs, as well as how to optimize for high performance carbon targets, especially when including MEP.
