CAGBC has been following reports that the US-based ENERGY STAR program may be phased out by the U.S. federal government before the next fiscal year begins on October 1, 2025. The ENERGY STAR program is widely used in Canada, most critically, ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager (ESPM), which is used to benchmark building energy performance and is tied to many energy efficiency policies.

This move by the U.S. federal government is concerning as ESPM offers a standardized national method for comparing building efficiency and has gained widespread adoption on both sides of the border. While no final decision has been made, we would love to see continued support for this highly successful program. CAGBC is in contact with Natural Resources Canada and have offered our support as they navigate potential changes to the program.
