The Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC) announced it received funding from the Government of Canada to support the project titled Transition Planning: A Tool for Accelerating High Performance Building Codes. This project will help facilitate the transition to net-zero emissions buildings by supporting building owners across Canada in developing customized transition plans.

“Building owners need better guidance and resources now to accelerate the transition to highly energy efficient zero-emissions buildings,” explained Laurna Strikwerda, Director of Project Development and Research at CAGBC. “The decisions and plans that building owners make now will determine carbon emissions for the next three decades. That’s why now is the time for the Transition Planning project, so we can deliver the guidance, resources, and support needed during this decisive decade for transition planning.”

The Transition Planning project includes development of a Transition Plan Guide and a Transition Plan Playbook as well as other resources that will accelerate the adoption and compliance of advanced energy codes in Canada. These resources will be designed to guide building owners in their transition to energy-efficient buildings. In addition, Transition Planning project will deliver a series of webinars and in-person workshops that offer learning opportunities to help owners use the guidance and playbook developed through the project.

The Transition Plan project will identify unique needs of three target jurisdictions across Canada and tailor resources to suit those needs. These regional Transition Plan Playbooks will provide financing options and information on technologies specifically designed for Vancouver, British Columbia, Toronto, Ontario, and Montreal, Quebec.

CAGBC will leverage its national membership and partnership network to create and promote the project in each regional jurisdiction. CAGBC will work with project partner REALPAC to reach a wider range of building owners across Canada, ensuring that the resources reach the building owners who need them the most.

“REALPAC is pleased to be partnering with CAGBC and the Government of Canada on this important project.  Many building owners are challenged by a range of financial pressures on their business right now.  The Low Carbon Transition Playbook will provide an industry perspective on the technology solutions and financial information building owners need to cost effectively pursue decarbonization and high-performance codes.” Quote from Darryl Neate, Vice President, Sustainability at REALPAC

The funding for the Transition Planning project comes from Natural Resources Canada. This funding is vital to the sectors of the economy that will put in place the plans necessary to reducing emissions from Canada’s built environment.
