As Canadians prepare for the 2025 federal election, affordable housing, economic resilience, and the rising cost of living are top concerns. Recognizing this critical moment, CAGBC has launched Unlocking the Value of Green Building – a roadmap for decision-makers seeking actionable solutions for housing affordability and economic stability.

A core message of this policy guide is that future-proofing Canada’s real estate assets is essential for long-term economic resilience. More than an environmental imperative, green building is a proven driver of innovation, job creation and investment appeal.

As of 2018, Canada’s green building sector supported over 460,000 jobs and contributed nearly $50 billion to GDP—numbers expected to grow in 2025. Around the world, governments are leveraging sustainable building practices to enhance competitiveness, attract investment, and build more resilient economies. Canada must do the same to remain a leader in a rapidly evolving global marketplace.

Engaging political parties on green building priorities

To ensure that green building remains part of the national conversation, CAGBC will actively engage with all five major federal parties to understand how each intends to address the biggest issues impacting Canada’s building sector. For example:

  • Benefits of green building to Canadians (e.g. lower utility bills or operating costs to businesses)
  • Affordable housing (e.g. reducing red tape while building faster and more sustainably)
  • Strengthening Canada’s economy (e.g. investment in workforce development)
  • Supporting innovation (e.g. support to Canadian industries and accelerate innovation in digitalization or low-carbon building materials)

As we gather party commitments, we’ll share insights with our members, helping you understand how each platform aligns with the green building sector’s priorities. Stay tuned for updates in the coming weeks as we continue our election outreach and provide key findings to help you make the most informed decision at the ballot box.
