CaGBC wins Clean 50 Top Project Award for Canada’s first Zero Carbon Building Standard
Toronto, ON – September 21, 2017 – The CaGBC is pleased to announce that it has won a Clean 50 Top Project Award for developing Canada’s first Zero Carbon Building Standard. The Award will be accepted at the Clean50 Summit 7.0 on September 28 in Toronto. Released in May 2017, the Zero Carbon Building Standard assesses carbon use in commercial, institutional, and multi-family buildings in Canada. In order to achieve large-scale market transformation, it was designed to be broadly applicable for many types of new and existing buildings across the country. It is also the only program of its kind to make carbon reductions the key indicator for building performance.
The release of the 2018 “Canada’s Clean50 Top Projects” list celebrates 20 sustainability oriented projects completed by groups ranging from large corporations and municipalities, to university students and individuals from across Canada.
This year’s Project winners were drawn from a robust list of nominees, and in addition to CaGBC’s win for the Zero Carbon Building Standard, include: building highly productive portable farms in milk crates deployed across vacant lots in Toronto, the combined efforts of a church, a charity and a builder to create net-zero energy affordable town homes in Edmonton, and the partnership in Quebec between a Resolute pulp and paper mill and a community that is now turning CO2 and the mill’s waste heat into millions of cucumbers at an adjacent greenhouse.
In all, the selected projects represent 20 different ways in which Canadians are demonstrating leadership and working to enhance our overall sustainability. Each was selected for their positive impact, innovation, and their ability to inspire other Canadians to attempt similar projects.
