The registration deadlines for the LEED v4 and LEED v4.1 commercial programs have been extended by one year: LEED v4/4.1 Building Design and Construction (BD+C), LEED Interior Design and Construction (ID+C), and LEED v4/4.1 Operations and Maintenance (O+M) will close to new registrations June 30, 2027.
With this extension, the certification sunset dates have also been extended one year to June 30, 2033.
More information on LEED certification deadlines can be found on USGBC website.
Market has been heard
The global LEED community has expressed that market conditions — including supply chain constraints, financing challenges, and regulatory uncertainty — are affecting project timelines. Giving additional time would provide meaningful flexibility for impacted projects. USGBC has responded with a one-year extension to both the registration deadline and sunset date. Extending the registration window supports follow-through on plans and investments, and continued progress worldwide. This measured approach maintains high standards while acknowledging the realities currently facing the building sector.
For Canadians
In Canada, the new dates will apply. We continue to build for the future with LEED v5. New projects are encouraged to embrace LEED v5 as the recommended path, building on the strong foundation established by earlier versions of the rating system while also raising the bar for measurable impact. LEED v5’s focus on the three pillars of decarbonization, quality of life, and ecosystem conservation and restoration, as well as the emphasis on resiliency, reflect what the Canadian market has been looking for in the evolution of the LEED rating system.
We encourage project teams to consider LEED v5 early for their projects.
