Principles of Smart Growth
This 1-hour online course outlines the problems associated with the urban sprawl and the many benefits of a "smart growth" approach. The nine principles of smart growth are explained: mixed land use; transportation choices; diverse housing, compact neighbourhoods, urban containment, intact ecosystems, green development, sense of place, and community voice. For each principle, the course provides implementation strategies along with numerous examples. Learners are encouraged to reflect on how they can apply their learning to their own communities or projects.

The presenter of this course is Yuill Herbert, Director of the Sustainability Solutions Group. Yuill has experience in community planning, sustainability assessments and green building projects, and has worked with more than 15 municipalities on projects related to sustainability and climate change. He helped introduce the LEED for Homes rating system in Canada and is active in sustainable development research.

This workshop will be of interest to anyone interested in the development of sustainable communities, especially LEED professionals, planners, or health professionals. No prerequisite knowledge is required. GBCI CE Hours: ERB-approved for 1 hour (general).
