Lunch & Learn
Health + Energy + Material:  Designing a new prototype for interiors

November 13, 2012 - Calgary

Please join the Alberta Chapter and Keith Hlewka from KaBeN Design Group for this informative presentation.  Over the past year KaBeN Design Group has been working with a national retailer on an interior design concept, which strives to return all materials and products used in the building process back to the earth when we are done with them. In a retail world that often changes we have been investigating how to make retail interior spaces more healthy, energy efficient and beautiful.

Does it really matter how energy efficient a building is if the environments we are creating are full of toxins? Don't you think we should be thinking about long-term impacts rather than short-term gains? Through research, utilizing a variety of professional peers, following various certification guidelines and contacting a variety of third party certification we are designing interiors, which are healthy, use less energy and are beautiful. This presentation will outline why you should know the answers to these important questions:

  1. Do you know who specifies your building materials?

  2. Do you know when the building material was designed?

  3. Do you know what the building material you are using is made of?

  4. Do you know where the building material you specify comes from?

  5. Do you know why it is important to know where the building materials you specify were made?

  6. Do you know how much energy was used to produce them or get them to your site?

The goal of this presentation is to bring awareness that the business of green is more than just energy efficiency and short-term costs. The real business of green needs to be about health, quality of life and long-term consequences.

Keith Hlewka is educated as an architect, scientist, and artist and is the principle of KaBeN Design Group.  Keith started KaBeN in 2008, so he could focus on architecture and the design of high-performance green buildings. Everyday Keith works with and pushes collaborators and himself to understand how to design and build better and more sustainable and energy efficient buildings. Recent projects include sustainable building research for Brookfield homes, a new "green" prototype store design for Rocky Mountain Soap Company and the design of several high performance homes throughout Alberta including a rural passive design home east of Edmonton.
