Vancouver’s Zero Emissions Building Plan, and regional implementation of the BC Energy Step Code (ESC) are collectively generating a local market of $3.3 billion for green building products between now and 2032, according to the VEC’s Green Buildings Market Forecast. VEC’s analysis shows that there are unique opportunities for BC and foreign companies to meet this need by sharing IP, building manufacturing partnerships, and targeting the greater market in Cascadia. With Vancouver’s suite of innovative green building policies, particularly the Zero Emissions Building Plan, and regional implementation of the BC Energy Step Code (ESC), local manufacturers, installers and suppliers could benefit from a $3.3 billion market for green building materials. Learn about the current building policy context in Vancouver and the region and walk through the specific product and manufacturing opportunities identified by this report.

Natural Resources Canada formed the High-Performance Building Community of Practice (HPB-CoP) in late 2017 to stimulate a national discussion on effective ways for the building sector to strive towards an eventual goal of net-zero energy. This initiative complements and supports a number of government and industry efforts, including the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change, CaGBC’s Zero Carbon Building Standard, BOMA Canada’s Net Zero Challenge awards program and certification initiatives such as Passive House and the Living Building Challenge. These efforts all contribute to our national progress towards a net-zero energy performance ideal and the HPB-CoP was created to build on that momentum.
