Stream 1 – Examining the intersections between green buildings and new technologies
Transformative technologies, access to vast amounts of data, and smart cloud-based solutions are transforming how we design, construct, operate and benchmark our built form. By leveraging innovative technologies, combined with new policies and sustainable strategies, building performance is being optimized, leading to better decisions and planning for the future. The sessions in this stream will address how innovation in advanced manufacturing, construction processes, data-access and analytics, and cloud-solutions is redefining the interface between green and smart. We will also learn how technology has influenced how we think about renewable energy generation, delivery and storage for buildings.
Stream 2 – The role of sustainable buildings in the new low carbon world
As we continue on the path to zero carbon, the way forward is defined by the policy, innovation and integrated approaches that are needed to accelerate real results. In this stream, sessions will showcase strategies for zero and near-zero carbon buildings, including applications of CaGBC’s Zero Carbon Building Standard. Innovation in energy efficiency, renewable on-site and district energy systems, and the most current thinking on embodied carbon will be explored, as well as the impacts of Canadian carbon policies and the costs and opportunities of the low carbon economy.
Stream 3 – Accelerating and broadening your impact
Led by the industry’s top practitioners, take part in advanced discussions about the evolution of Canada’s leading green building tools. Navigate the challenges and opportunities associated with LEED v4 and the exciting improvements that will make LEED v4.1 an even better tool to guide and verify holistic sustainability. Explore how these programs reflect resilience and climate change mitigation, including significant updates in the way they assess energy performance, and discuss the tools and measures that will help ensure ongoing high performance. Hear from early adopters of the RELi resilience standard, TRUE Zero Waste program, the Parksmart certification system for parking structures and the Sustainable SITES Initiative for landscapes.
Stream 4 – Retrofits for a clean and resilient economy
Retrofitting 55,000 large existing buildings across the country is essential to meet Canada’s GHG emission reduction targets. A robust retrofit economy requires the private, public and non-governmental sectors to work together to make Canada’s existing building stock capable of withstanding, responding to and recovering from climate change. This stream covers portfolio-wide retrofit strategies, district energy systems and new financing models. Increase your understanding of energy benchmarking as a means to identify and prioritize retrofit opportunities. Explore IREE certification for quality assurance and consider the value of bundling projects for major investments.
Stream 5 – Harmonizing social, economic and environmental sustainability
As the industry focuses on low carbon solutions, it’s critical that we do not lose sight of the economic, social and broader environmental benefits of green buildings. The spaces in which we live and work should have a positive impact on our productivity, job satisfaction and well-being, leading to stronger employee recruitment and retention, lower operating costs, and higher rent revenues for owners and operators. Learn about new programs and research, the embodied energy of materials and explore case studies of projects that are successfully balancing green building, health and wellness with business priorities.
