Navigating Zero Carbon Building Design: Case Study

DURATION: 0.5 hour

Evolv1 is a commercial office building located in Waterloo’s Ideas Quarter. It is the first building in Canada to be certified under the CaGBC’s Zero Carbon Building Program. Not only does it represent the next generation of Zero Carbon buildings, but it was also designed to achieve Net Positive Energy and LEED Platinum certification. Today we know that this target can be achieved, but evolv1 proves it can be done in a speculative building constructed within competitive market constraints. This project builds the business case for why all developers can, and should, be building to Zero Carbon right now.

Through this session, participants will learn about evolv1 and the important shift in the building industry towards reducing carbon emissions. The Integrated Design team for evolv1 will present the design process and some of its challenges and will address the critical question: what is required for the industry to shift, and for Zero Carbon buildings to become the new normal?
