A Road Map to Net-Zero Carbon for Campuses

DURATION: 1 hour

DIALOG and RWDI have developed a holistic methodology to create net-zero energy campus "road maps". The method starts with a campus' reported carbon footprint to establish a baseline, and then tests the relative benefit of implementing low-carbon strategies overtime to allow realistic future-casting and target setting.

This session will describe the elements of the road-map, as well as identify what campus projects should do to meet their net-zero energy goals. The presenters will discuss next-level energy management metrics and key strategies that can drastically reduce traditional energy use - all while being transparent to stakeholders. Numerous examples will be used to illustrate real word examples of low carbon campus planning in action.

This session will be of interest to architects, operators, planners and designers with a focus on higher education, healthcare, public and/or corporate campuses that are strategically planning to leverage climate action funding.

This course is delivered by Craig Applegath of DIALOG and Mike Williams of RWDI.

A Roadmap for Large Building Retrofits in Canada

DURATION: 1 hour

This course will discuss a new report released recently that delivers a detailed roadmap for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from large buildings like office towers, recreation centres, hospitals, arenas and schools across the country. CaGBC’s A Roadmap for Retrofits in Canada demonstrates the critical role that existing buildings play in realizing Canada’s low carbon future.

As part of this course, participants will learn about how large buildings can contribute to achieving a reduction in GHG emissions of at least 30 percent, with the potential to reach 51 percent by 2030. The instructor will also discuss what way the type, size, and age of large buildings, along with energy sources and the carbon intensity of regional electrical grids in Canada, can affect energy efficiency and carbon emissions. Finally, participants will get to hear about provincially-specific retrofit pathways that include a combination of recommissioning, deep retrofits, renewable energy, and fuel switching actions.

This course is delivered by Akua Schatz, Director of Advocacy and Development at the CaGBC and Eric Chisolm of WSP.

Building Strong Market Infrastructure for Canada's Retrofit

DURATION: 1 hour

CaGBC’s research demonstrates that national targets can only be reached by reducing the emissions of the millions of square feet of existing institutional, commercial, and residential buildings across the country. Yet, while green building approaches, practices, and technologies are being widely adopted for new buildings, there is an underinvestment in the retrofit of Canada’s existing building stock to drive energy and GHG reductions. Correcting this underinvestment requires the development of a strong retrofit economy where the market takes the lead in transforming Canada’s built environment to help fight climate change and create new economic opportunities for Canadians.

This session distills information from a recent report and sets out a series of comprehensive and specific actions for governments and, more importantly, for industry to build one of the world’s most robust and dynamic retrofit economies by 2030.

This course will be delivered by Akua Schatz. Akua is the Senior Director of Advocacy and Market Development at the Canada Green Building Council.
