Event highlights

This half-day workshop will introduce you to zero carbon buildings, with particular emphasis on the CaGBC's Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) Standard. Participants will learn about the need for a carbon-focused building performance standard, as well as the difference between focusing on energy vs. carbon. They will hear about the ZCB Framework, the Standard's precursor and foundational report, including the CaGBC's definition of a zero carbon building and the key principles that guided the Standard's development. The course provides information on each of the key components and requirements of the Standard for both streams - ZCB-Design and ZCB-Performance. This includes:

• Achieving the Zero Carbon balance
• Providing a Zero Carbon Transition Plan
• Installing Minimum 5% Onsite Renewable Energy (ZCB-Design only)
• Achieving a Thermal Energy Demand Intensity Target (ZCB-Design only)
• Reporting Energy Use Intensity
• Reporting Peak Energy Demand
• Reporting Embodied Carbon

This course will be taught by William Marshall.  William is a Professional Engineer with extensive process and project management experience in commercial, residential and industrial sectors. For the last 12 years, he has been directly involved in the design and implementation of sustainable buildings, energy efficiency, and high-performance mechanical systems.

During his career, William has worked as the Environmental Manager for Michelin North America, as the lead Faculty in the Nova Scotia Community College’s Energy Sustainability Engineering Technology Program (ESET), and currently is an active faculty member with both the Canadian Institute for Energy Training (CIET) and the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC). Having developed and delivered curriculum for engineering technologists, corporate clients, and other industry groups, William is dedicated to moving energy management into the daily culture of organizations.

As an experienced energy management professional, William brings his knowledge of LEED, building commissioning, HVAC design, energy modeling and auditing skills to the CIET team. Previous work experiences in the industrial and educational sectors have provided him with a unique perspective on energy conservation and management. William stays well connected to both the operational and technical aspects of the business and splits his time between the office and the field.
