Canada has ambitious goals to reduce this country's carbon emissions and help curb global warming. Buildings will play a major role in any successful outcome. In October 2018, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a report on global warming that said staying below a 1.5º C temperature increase will require a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050. With buildings accounting for 35% of all greenhouse gas emissions, they must be central to Canada's climate plan.
The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) is hosting "Accelerating to Zero" in Toronto on March 28th, 2019. This full-day summit is designed to bring industry and government together to explore the policies, programs and innovations needed to achieve zero carbon buildings.
The aim of Accelerating to Zero is to educate, inform and inspire leaders in the green building industry and help them leverage new opportunities presented by a low carbon economy. This full-day event is expected to attract architects, engineers, building owners, property developers, trade unions, utilities, technologists and representatives from every level of governments. Program highlights include:
• The release of CaGBC's "Zero Carbon Buildings Costing Study," which outlines the business case for zero carbon in different building types across six Canadian cities (Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver). The report provides an understanding of the financial implications of pursuing carbon-neutral buildings.
• A panel on "Regulating Zero" that will feature government and industry representatives discussing the policies, programs and ideas that encourage zero carbon development in local areas.
• Information sessions on how to reduce Thermal Energy Demand Intensity (TEDI) and the need to rethink HVAC systems and adopt low grade heat pumps or low carbon district energy systems.
The day will conclude with a networking event from 4:30 - 6:00 P.M. to meet fellow attendees and regional stakeholders.
