Course Description

Ready to take on the challenge of Zero Carbon?
This half-day workshop will introduce you to zero carbon buildings, with particular emphasis on the CaGBC's Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) Standard. Participants will be equipped with important foundational knowledge, as well as an understanding of how the ZCB Standard could potentially be used for their current or future projects. The workshop covers the requirements of the Zero Carbon Building Standard for both new and existing buildings. This includes:

- The zero carbon balance;
- The zero carbon transition plan;
- Thermal Energy Demand Intensity (TEDI);
- Energy Use Intensity (EUI)
- Peak demand;
- Renewable energy; and
- Embodied carbon

This workshop provides the opportunity to learn from a subject matter expert in a facilitated environment. Exercises and group discussion helps to reinforce the material. Note: This workshop is not intended to provide professional level knowledge on how to develop strategies or prepare supporting documentation for program compliance.

This workshop will be hosted by Adam Stoker

Adam Stoker has more than 10 years of experience working with energy efficiency and sustainable buildings. His background in mechanical engineering, project management and green design allows him to offer a broad range of knowledge and expertise on sustainable design and environmental stewardship.  Adam has worked on over 50 LEED projects across western Canada and has worked directly with designers, contractors, and building operators in all phases of the sustainable building process.  In his current role with the University of Calgary he is focused on the delivery of high performance green buildings and sites, and is part of the team delivering the $280 million MacKimmie Complex Redevelopment Project – one of 16 projects participating in the CaGBC Zero Carbon Building Pilot Program.

Always looking for opportunities to share his hands on experience as a green building practitioner, Adam Stoker has presented on sustainability in the built environment at conferences for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the Canadian Institute of Planners, and the Canada Green Building Council.  Adam was involved in the development and delivery of curriculum through the CaGBC’s Higher Education Program at Mount Royal University, and formerly sat on the Board of Directors for the CaGBC Alberta Chapter.  Through his current role in the University of Calgary’s Office of Sustainability, Adam has had the opportunity to present on green building topics to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences in the academic community ranging from engineering to environmental communications, from environmental chemistry to high performance libraries.
