Join CaGBC, WorldGBC and our national conference and showcase partner REALPAC, in Toronto for the largest and most important green building industry event of the year.

This year’s event examines what is happening in Canada and around the world to meet aggressive international carbon emissions targets. Participants will have access to the latest knowledge and insights from Canadian and global experts in green building design and retrofits, government policy, real estate finance, market transformation, and technology innovation. For the first time in Canada, notable progress is being made by the business community and government in addressing the carbon challenge through innovative solutions and transformative leadership.

We are proud to announce that Building Lasting Change 2018 will serve as host to WorldGBC Congress. Each year, the WorldGBC Congress is hosted by a different green building council with the goal of bringing green building councils from Europe, Africa, Middle East and North Africa, the Americas, and Asia-Pacific together to share advancements in our joint mission to transform the built environment globally. Click here to read more about this exciting partnership.

In addition to more people, more countries represented and greater insight into the world’s greatest green building accomplishments, the WorldGBC will spearhead the International Stream, which will showcase new approaches for international Net Zero Carbon buildings; major trends in urban planning with inspiration from the world’s cutting-edge cities; and ground-breaking insights into the link between green building and health, wellbeing and productivity, generated from case studies from around the world.

The Call for Presentations is Now Open!

We invite all CaGBC members to apply for the opportunity to share their expertise and insight with Canada's largest network of green building industry professionals. The following streams will form the continuing education component of the event. Submissions will be reviewed by our esteemed program committee whose expertise represents all key areas of focus. We look forward to delivering world-class educational content thanks to the diligent work of members and committee.

We’re encouraging applications from around the world in all five education streams. This year, our International Stream: Insights from the World’s Green Building Leaders and Experts is being developed and delivered with guidance from the WorldGBC. In addition, one session in each of the other streams is available for an international presentation. Please note, our program committee is dedicated to identifying the presentations best suited to the themes outlined below and may elect to reassign a submission to a more suitable stream.

The Call for Presentations for all five education streams and the EGP Innovation Challenge will close on December 22, 2017. Applicants will be notified of the status of their submission by the end of March 2018. Applicants chosen to speak at the conference will receive a 50 per cent discount off conference and social event registration fees.

Stream 1: Moving toward Zero Carbon

Stream 1: Moving toward Zero Carbon

The CaGBC’s Canadian-made solution to guide low carbon buildings of the future has inspired many developments across the country. This stream will provide an opportunity to learn from the results to date of the Zero Carbon Building Pilot Program and will highlight innovation in achieving net zero building performance. Topics can include zero carbon design and retrofits, embodied carbon of materials, lifecycle assessment and lifecycle costing, renewable energy technologies and options, and how to balance the GHG reduction imperative with health and other environmental priorities. Projects from Europe, the U.S. and other countries are encouraged to apply in order to provide insight into global net zero projects through the WorldGBC Net Zero initiative; and to examine the challenges and progressive policies/regulations for progressing new and existing buildings to zero carbon.

Stream 2: Establishing a Retrofit Economy in Canada

Stream 2: Establishing a Retrofit Economy in Canada

Accelerating the large scale retrofits of existing buildings is critical in achieving global climate change targets. Successful pathways for improvement in existing building performance will be showcased in this stream, including first-hand experience on deep building retrofit practices, fuel switching and renewable energy applications in Canada, U.S. and Europe. The best examples of scaling up retrofits across Canada, particularly in class B and C office buildings, institutional buildings (government, universities/colleges), multi-unit residential buildings, and national defence facilities, will be given consideration. Presentations on initiatives and programs that enable retrofits, such as BuildUpon (a WorldGBC initiative), the Investor Confidence Project, as well as leading Canadian policies and programs on benchmarking, performance data and management tools, will round out this stream.

Stream 3: WorldGBC International Stream: Insights from the World’s Green Building Leaders and Experts

Stream 3: WorldGBC International Stream: Insights from the World’s Green Building Leaders and Experts

This international stream is developed and delivered with guidance from the WorldGBC to provide all delegates with access to information that focuses on global innovation, and demonstrates what is possible in Canada, and where future market opportunities might lie for Canadian companies. The momentum demonstrated by major global leaders, practitioners and policy makers embracing Net Zero, Health and Wellbeing, and Green Cities will be showcased along with exemplar approaches from around the world. International market leaders on health, wellbeing and productivity will present ground-breaking research showing the link between people, planet and profit – encouraging us to consider green building as part of our HR strategies, not just our sustainability strategies. Major trends in urban planning and city-scale building policies from the world’s cutting edge cities will inspire and encourage delegates to think differently about how we plan, build and retrofit our cities.

Stream 4: Creating Green and Resilient Cities

Stream 4: Creating Green and Resilient Cities

Cities are the focal point for action on climate change mitigation and resilience enhancing the livability, safety and well-being of Canadians in urban environments. This stream will provide new thinking on how green building design aligns with creating resilient neighbourhoods and cities, and share new industry standards and approaches that drive change on a city-wide scale beyond the building structures. Presentations are sought to address opportunities to scale up change through LEED for Cities and LEED for Transit; enhance health and wellbeing through WELL 2.0 and the WELL Community standard; and offer action in other areas such as green mobility (Parksmart) and sustainable landscapes (SITES); and eliminating waste disposal and promoting the circular economy (Zero Waste/TRUE).

Stream 5: Insight, Innovation and Leadership for Advanced LEED Practitioners

Stream 5: Insight, Innovation and Leadership for Advanced LEED Practitioners

The acceptance and reputation of LEED in the marketplace provides a significant opportunity to expand its adoption and reduce environmental impacts like no other rating system. With more than 150 LEED v4 projects in Canada, and growing, this stream is targeted towards the advanced practitioner. This stream will focus on the role of LEED v4 in getting to low energy/carbon performance and achieving exceptional building performance in a range of LEED categories from Energy, Water and Materials to Sites, and Health and Wellbeing. The alignment of the WELL and LEED standards to support superior occupant health, and the emergence of a robust ARC platform to support performance management and project recertification, will be discussed. Learn from expert practitioners with real insights and solutions that can be applied directly to your buildings.
