At the Summit you'll hear first-hand from industry leaders and experts about the new tools, programs and ideas surrounding building materials and their impact on human health and the environment.

Continuing Education Hours: This Summit is approved for seven (7) GBCI hours, as well as LEED Specific BD+C, ID+C. GBCI hours will be reported automatically only if your badge is scanned upon entry to each session. 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Session 1 - The Science Behind Green Building Materials – presented by Professor Vivian Loftness, Carnegie Mellon University and Professor Bruce Lanphear, Simon Fraser University

This session will kick-off the day by exploring the science behind building materials and their health implications.

Vivian Loftness, FAIA, LEEDAP, the Paul Mellon Chair for Sustainable Architecture, is one of 35 University Professors at Carnegie Mellon University and served a decade as Head of the School of Architecture. She is an internationally renowned researcher, author and educator focused on environmental design and sustainability, climate and regionalism in architecture, and the integration of advanced building systems for health and productivity. With over 30 years of industry and government research funding, she is a key member of Carnegie Mellon’s leadership in sustainability research and education, and a key contributor to the ongoing development of the Intelligent Workplace - a living laboratory of commercial building innovations for performance. In 2013, Vivian was recognized as a LEED Fellow, Senior Fellow of the Design Futures Council, and one of 13 Stars of Building Science by the Building Research Establishment in the UK. Vivian has a Bachelors of Science and a Masters of Architecture from MIT.

Bruce Lanphear, MD, MPH, is a Clinician Scientist at the Child & Family Research Institute, BC Children's Hospital and Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia. His primary research goal is to help quantify and ultimately prevent disease and disability - like asthma, learning problems and ADHD - due to exposures to environmental contaminants, such as lead, tobacco, flame retardants and pesticides. He is leading an effort to build an online Atlas of Environmental Health to enhance public understanding of how environmental influences impact human health.

Session 2 - The Owner and Tenant Perspective – with UBC, TD Bank and Genetech

This session will look at the positive health impacts of green buildings from an owner and tenant perspective, and how to demonstrate value when planning a project or marketing a product.

The panel will be comprised of Alberto Cayuela, Director of Operations and Business Development, University of British Columbia, Roger Johnson, Senior Vice President, Enterprise Real Estate, TD Bank and Katie Excoffier, Environmental Sustainability manager at Genentech in South San Francisco.

 Alberto Cayuela, Director of Operations and Business Development:, PEng PMP LEED AP - Mr. Cayuela heads CIRS business development efforts and oversees the operations of the Centre. He leads the preparation of strategic research plans and manages research collaborations and industry partnerships. Mr. Cayuela brings a wealth of experience in sustainable building and renewable energy projects garnered in the private sector: his last position was senior project manager with Stantec Consulting where he managed the planning, implementation, and delivery of complex capital projects and high-performance buildings, including the CIRS building. With 20+ years' experience in capital and technology projects Mr. Cayuela has developed a strong background in front-end project planning and controls, and significant expertise in project management best practices, project organization and governance, stakeholder management, and performance tracking and reporting.

Roger Johnson, SVP of Enterprise Real Estate for TD Bank oversees the Bank's global portfolio of 25MM square feet of space. This includes more than 2,200 branches in Canada and the US and more than 10MM square feet of Corporate office space. Roger and his team are responsible for Retail Branch Distribution strategy as well as the Optimization of the Corporate space. Prior to joining TD he was an SVP at Bank of America overseeing the Consumer and Small Banking division which consists of 6,000 branches and more than 20MM square feet‎ of office space.  Roger earned his BA in Economics at Hartwick College, an MBA in Finance at Pace University and a Certification in Real Estate Valuation from NYU.

 Katie Excoffier is the Environmental Sustainability manager at Genentech in South San Francisco. She has a BA in Biology from UCSD, an MS in Genetics from UC Berkeley, and an MBA in Sustainable Business from Presidio Graduate School, and recently earned her LEED GA accreditation. Katie leads Genentech's sustainability council, coordinating strategy around energy, water, waste, transportation, wellbeing, and Green BioPharma. She also leads "Green Genes", the employee volunteer green team with over 3000 members. She is involved in two recent initiatives of the Northern California chapter of the USGBC: the Best Buildings Challenge, and the Building Health Initiative. A focus on healthy buildings is a natural extension to Genentech's sustainability program, given its core healthcare mission and the important synergies between a clean & healthy environment and human wellbeing.

Session 3 - Material Requirements in LEED v4 - Presented by Brendan Owens, Chief of Engineering, U.S. Green Building Council

This session will touch on the evolution of the Materials credits in LEED, break down the details of the LEED v4 Building Product Disclosure and Optimization credits, and discuss future direction and refinement of the credits.

Brendan oversees technical development and integration of rating systems at USGBC. In this role Brendan collaborates with teams developing LEED, PEER and other rating systems and led the team that established the over-arching system goals for LEED v4. He is currently working to integrate this thinking into the other programs USGBC collaborates with. Brendan is a member of the integration committee working to align Standard 189.1, the IgCC and LEED. He is board member of the New Buildings Institute and is deputy director of the center for cycling technology at USGBC. Additionally, Brendan is a board member of the foundation USGBC is partnering with to build the William Jefferson Clinton Children's Center in Port au Prince, Haiti. Brendan is a proud Boilermaker, a licensed Professional Engineer and was honored as a LEED Fellow in 2012.

Session 4 - The Tools and Programs to Help You

This session will close the day with an introduction to the key features of the tools and programs that will help manufacturers optimize and market their products, and help designers make better informed decisions that maximize the health potential of buildings.

Discussion will include subject matter experts and representatives from the organizations responsible for Cradle to Cradle, GreenScreen, Environmental Product Declarations, Health Product Declarations, and Declare.

The panel will be comprised of Susan Klosterhaus, Vice President, Science and Certification, Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute; Amelia Nestler, Consultant, Clean Production Action; James Connelly, International Living Future Institute; Jennifer O'Connor, President, Athena Institute and Mike Manzi, Specifications Manager, boora architects.

2:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Evaluate and Understand Health and Life-Cycle Impacts of Products - led by Max Richter and Kathy Wardle of Perkins & Will

Interactive Session Part 1

Learning Objective:

  • Multiple tools are often necessary to determine the environmental attributes of a product.
  • Products need to be researched to understand the health and environmental impacts.
  • There are often gaps, not all products have information available from all of the programs.

In this session, attendees will sit at tables assigned a particular product category (example: carpet, paint, insulation, etc.).  Each table will have product information on 3 different products.  These will be in the form of EPDs , HPDs,  C2C certificates, GreenScreen Reports and Declare Labels.  Each of the sheets with product information will have one critical piece of information deliberately left out.  The product reps from the different programs will move around the room in a speed dating format to answer questions about the product information.  Attendees at the table will need to review and discuss the documentation and gather information from the program reps.

Interactive Session Part 2 

Learning Objective:

  • Evaluating products to meet environmental objectives is complex
  • Learn how to use the different product programs that are available

In this session, attendees remain at the same tables.  Each table is assigned a set of environmental criteria from the 'owner'.  Examples of the criteria are lowest embodied GHG emissions, no flame retardants, lowest VOC emissions.  They have to evaluate the three products options and discuss which product best meets the owner's requirements.  The groups will report back to the larger group on their findings and also how they used the information from the different programs.

Max Richter is a Senior Architect in the Vancouver office of Perkins+Will. He contributes to mixed-use transit oriented developments, higher education projects, and complex, multi-modal transportation projects.  In addition to his design work, Max co-chairs Perkins+Will's internal Material Health Task Force, dedicated to advancing the agenda for healthy building materials and advocating for industry. Max is a trusted advisor to the firm, and was key project team member for both Centre of Interactive Research on Sustainability, and the VanDusen Botanical Gardens Visitor Center, both certified LEED Platinum and pursuing the Living Building Challenge.

As Associate Principal and Director of Research, Kathy directs Perkins+Will Vancouver office's research and sustainable design advisory team. Kathy joined the firm in 2002 with a strong commitment to sustainable design and construction, and has considerable experience working on LEED and Living Building Challenge projects. On a firm wide level, Kathy helped author, implement and direct Perkins+Will's Sustainable Design Initiative. She regularly speaks and writes about sustainable design and healthy materials, and has authored several articles on healthy building materials and transparency. Kathy is a member of the City of Vancouver's Green Building Advisory Committee, Co-Chair of the International Living Future Institute Cascadia Congress, and is a past-chair of the Cascadia Green Building Council.
