Stream 3 - Getting in on the Ground Floor: Health and Well-being Takes Off
Room 206 B
Driven by the next version of LEED v4 focus on materials and health, global efforts supported by the WorldGBC and the International Living Well Building Institute (with its WELL Building Standard®), the interest in health and well-being and green buildings has taken a leap into the consciousness of designers and building owners over the last two years. The WELL Building Standard is identifying new aspirations and ambitious targets to improve the health and well-being at places of work, study and at home. This stream provides an opportunity to learn about the leading projects in Canada with regard to design, implementation and demonstrated benefits to employers, building owners and end users. Understanding of linkages to LEED credits and certified projects along with the availability and performance of materials/products as required under LEED v4 will also be discussed.
Conference delegates will be given access to PowerPoint
presentations which will be posted to the website over the next two
weeks.

support and enhance every businesses biggest cost – its people. In this
session, learn how TD Bank and Cadillac Fairview worked together as
tenant and landlord in pursuit of the WELL Building Standard, how they

Designing Circadian Light Systems for Healthier Outcomes (Collaborative Discussion)
1 GBCI CE hour
Presented by: Ed Clark, Sustainable Designer, ZGF Architects LLP; Marty Brennan, Sustainable Designer, ZGF Architects LLP
Description:The lighting of workstations, workplaces, and homes play
significant roles in achieving adequate exposure to the light resources
that influence circadian rhythms, the primary synchronizer of our body
clock to local time on Earth. When daylight may not be sufficient,
electric lighting, coupled with colour shifting components, can
supplementally support circadian entrainment. This session will cover
basic concepts of circadian rhythms and spectral light, and how to how
to use lighting software to investigate luminous environments that
promote circadian entrainment to improve productivity and well-being.

Better Health through Greener Buildings
1 GBCI CE hour
Presented by: Kathy Gerwig, Vice President, Kaiser Permanente (Master Speaker)
Description: Designing and building facilities that are good for the
planet and for the well-being of people who work in them has enormous
potential. Kaiser Permanente has made the health of the natural
environment a part of its approach to providing quality, affordable
health care. By addressing environmental stressors that affect
communities as a whole, we can also create healthier places for
individuals. Examples include cleaner energy, non-toxic materials, and
minimizing waste. Blurring the lines between the community and the
facility with walking paths, gardens, and farmers markets makes healthy
and greener activities easier.

LEED for Healthcare and WELL in Canada's North
1 GBCI CE hour
Presented by: John Lyons, National Director of Sustainability, DIALOG
Description: The Edson Healthcare Centre is a much needed rural
Healthcare facility being constructed on the outskirts of Edson,
Alberta. The project scope has expanded to include a continuing care
facility and a physician's clinic. Following an Integrated Design
approach, the project team is seeking certification under the innovative
USGBC LEED for Healthcare 2009 Rating System. Delve into the
sustainability aspects of the LEED Silver targeted Edson Healthcare
Centre and pay particular emphasis to unique Healthcare credits that
speak to the Integrated Design Process, Innovative Materials and
Interiors, and the Health/Green Benefits of Green Building and Design.
In addition, lessons learned on implementing the Healthcare Rating
System through LEED Online will be shared. The project will be used as a
model for briefly exploring LEEDv4 for Healthcare certification, and
how that will relate to the WELL Standard.
1:45 p.m. - 2:45 p.m.
Daylight Autonomy in LEED v4 and WELL
1 GBCI CE hour
Presented by: Marc Trudeau, Sustainable Building Specialist, Stantec Consulting
Description: LEED v4 and the WELL Building Standard have the same
requirements for daylight modelling and spatial daylight autonomy, and
these requirements are increasingly applied as targets for Canadian
projects. Spatial daylight autonomy results will be presented for a
typical office space in Canadian locations, as modelled using
DIVA-for-Rhino. Join this discussion on how to meet the LEED and WELL
requirements in Canadian locations, including north of the Arctic
Circle. Model results will be used to show how the daylit area is
affected by floor plate depth, window size, and window orientation.
3:15 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.
