Stream 2 - The Climate Change Imperative: Getting to Zero/Low Carbon Buildings

Climate change is back on the government policy agenda with a focus on buildings as a practical and actionable solution to reduce carbon emissions. Many provincial and municipal governments are consulting on or formulating their climate change positions and policies. This will have an impact on the green buildings sector particularly with regard to designing low/zero carbon buildings through enhanced energy efficiency approaches combined with renewable energy technologies and systems. This stream focuses on how to get to net zero or carbon neutral new buildings and district developments through design, technology and energy delivery systems. International examples of successful projects and programs are critical in understanding what progress is necessary and what knowledge and technology is already available to make net zero and carbon neutral buildings a reality in Canada.

How to Wisely Invest in your Building Envelope

Description: Learn about the real quantified energy use impact of building envelope variables which will be demonstrated by an innovative and colourful new tool using parametric energy simulation methodology. The base model will be a building with ten stories, the same HVAC and lighting systems, and the same occupancy. Variables will include insulation thickness, thermal breaks in balconies, residential/commercial, window-to-wall ratio, glazing type, climate, and more. The tool is intuitive, easily understood, and reliable, and attendees will leave with a better understanding of the real impacts of the envelope on energy use.

From Concept to Operation: York Region's First Attempt at a Net-zero Energy Building in Ontario

Description: The Bill Fisch Forest Stewardship & Education Centre is The Regional Municipality of York's most sustainable building to date, pursuing both Living Building Challenge and LEED Platinum certifications. The building, located in one of the Region's FSC certified forests, is approximately 360m2 in size and consists of corporate meeting space, classroom, hoteling and ancillary spaces. From the owner's perspective, you’ll hear details about the pursuit of their first net-zero energy building including challenges, solutions, how progress toward net-zero target is being monitored, results achieved to date and lessons learned that can be applied to future projects.

Carbon Shift: Why carbon will overtake energy as the core performance indicator for green buildings

Description: Energy is often used as the key indicator to assess building performance based on the assumption that it's an accurate indicator of carbon emissions. The truth, however, is not so simple, and there are signs that carbon performance will rightly come to play an increasingly important role in assessing green buildings. This change is being led by the new LEED Dynamic Plaque. The core metric used in its energy scoring methodology is carbon intensity. This makes it increasingly difficult to ignore the impact of buildings served by electricity grids with high carbon intensity. With the ability for properties to use power purchase agreements from renewable energy providers, it is becoming possible to choose your grid, and, with the advent of the LEED Dynamic Plaque, a building’s certification level will be affected not just by energy, but by carbon as well.

Wood Buildings - Moving from Prototype to Mainstream

Description: In the context of accelerating urban growth and climate change, we need to capitalize on opportunities to dramatically reduce the embodied carbon signature of our buildings. Pushing the boundaries of wood as a structural material is one part of this puzzle. This presentation will investigate the use of mass timber construction in several different case studies, including both site built and prefabricated cases from the UBC campus and around Vancouver. Case studies include the 18-storey Brock Commons, the new Campus Energy Centre and the Monad prototype. As well, we will challenge the audience with questions of how we can achieve the necessary paradigm shift that will allow us to create livable, adaptable and affordable solutions for our urban environments.

Net-zero Buildings in Cold Climates

Description: Achieving net-zero is challenging for buildings in cold climates. Significant energy reductions are essential to achieving a net-zero building as onsite renewable opportunities are often limited. Consideration for site and building massing become important to cost effectively provide sufficient renewable energy. Hear their experiences on several net-zero energy projects, noting the differences between the design processes and the technologies highlighting the secret to a successful net-zero project. (spoiler alert : It’s not the advanced technologies). The impact of building orientation, building envelope performance and different HVAC design strategies will be analyzed. Taking analysis one step further, you’ll see how the design changes if an Architectural 2030 target or a carbon neutral target is selected.

Exploring Metrics that Best Define High-performance Building Designs

Description: Natural Resources Canada’s Office of Energy Efficiency (OEE) will present on the status of their recent consultation on “high-performance building design metrics”. This exercise follows comprehensive research undertaken by OEE on comparative metrics that could potentially identify the most energy-efficient buildings; ones demonstrating significant progress along the path towards net-zero energy. During the winter of 2016, OEE requested feedback from over 100 industry experts across Canada, the United States and Mexico (including building owners, designers, architects, academics, provincial representatives and energy consultants) on a selection of existing and new metric options, as well as more general issues concerning the recognition of high-performance designs.

Innovative Planning Frameworks that Yield Low Carbon Solutions for UBC Okanagan Campus and Waterfront Toronto

Description: This session highlights two projects that are developing frameworks on how to implement integrated sustainability solutions. With a focus on low carbon development and climate change resilience, attendees will learn about the consultation process, challenges and opportunities, and results from UBC Okanagan’s Campus Whole System Infrastructure Plan that outlines a roadmap for realizing positive ecological landscape, 64% water reduction, 41% energy reduction, and 91% carbon reduction by 2030 despite growth. You will also learn about Waterfront Toronto’s new Resiliency and Innovation Framework, which has defined objectives, strategies, targets, pilot opportunities and tools for implementation to achieve the next level of leadership in low carbon development, climate change resilience, and advanced innovation within Toronto’s designated waterfront area.
