Every year, through the Chapter’s Community Legacy Program, the CaGBC Ottawa Chapter works with local charities, NGOs and businesses to identify opportunities to grow the green building market and create lasting impactful change. We seek out strategic alliance and lead collaborative projects that support our goal of making Ottawa the Greenest Capital in the World through green buildings and neighborhoods.
Building Energy Enhancement Service (BEES) Project
Our 2017-2018 Project
This project is designed to catalyze comprehensive energy retrofits by working with 5 building owners to complete energy audits, explore how to make the retrofit financially viable, and support in the implementation of the retrofits. The project will also support the retrofit economy through the creation of an Existing Building Task Force managed by the CaGBC Ottawa Chapter.
Why Existing Buildings?
Existing buildings make up over 80 percent of Canada’s building stock and in cities like Ottawa are responsible for 55 percent of their emissions.
In research commissioned by the CaGBC, it was found that buildings over 25,000 square feet and high-rise residential buildings 5 storeys or greater can reduce GHGs up to 44 percent, equivalent to a 19.4 million tonne reduction and $6.2 billion in energy savings. Retrofits stimulate local green job creation and keep energy dollars local.
Coopérative d'habitation Desloges was established in 1992 in Viscount Alexander Park, Ottawa as a Francophone community. It consists of 60 apartments in one seven-storey tower and 69 townhouses all served by the same heating system. They have underground parking, on-site laundry and one large meeting room.
Cliff House was established in 1992 in Viscount Alexander Park, Ottawa and consists of 68 apartments and 20 townhouses. There is on-site laundry and office space in this non-profit community housing.
Coop Voisins was established in 1991 in Sandy Hill, Ottawa as a bilingual housing cooperative. The six-storey building consists of 76 apartments, on-site laundry, and several meeting rooms. The already have a solar MicroFIT array on their roof.
Unity Non-Profit Housing was established in 1993 in Hintonburg, Ottawa as a multi-cultural building. It consists of 62 apartments, underground parking, laundry, and ground floor office space all in one nine-storey tower.
151 Parkdale was established in 1993 in Mechanicsville, Ottawa as a multi-cultural building. It consists of 75 apartments, underground parking, on-site laundry, and a rooftop terrace all in one eight-storey tower.
