Award Categories

Chapter Awards: The calibre and quality of green building projects, the commitment of the volunteers and the impact of the work witnessed across the country is celebrated throughout the year through Chapter Leadership Awards programs. The winners of the Chapter awards will automatically flow through to the finalist round for National competition. Check your Chapter's website for details about awards, events and presentations.

National Awards: The CaGBC Awards recognize individuals and organizations that have made a significant contribution to the CaGBC's mission and goals in advancing the green building industry in Canada. Awards will be presented at the CaGBC Gala in Vancouver on May 29, 2019.

Leadership Awards

Inspired Educator

Leadership Award - Inspired Educator

The Inspired Educator Award recognizes a deserving individual (or institute) who educates learners in sustainable design, green building, operations and/or real estate development at a post-secondary academic institution. The recipient demonstrates passion and success in implementing qualitative changes to the curriculum and has delivered "sustainable" content with the desire to better educate the next generation green building professionals.

Emerging Green Leader

Leadership Award - Emerging Green Leader

The Emerging Green Leader Award recognizes a deserving student or young professional who has made a significant contribution to advocating, educating or practicing green building and/or community development. This individual is recognized as a leader among their peers and has a strong commitment to green building, the environment and positive change. Emerging Green Professionals (EGP) are eligible for this award. An EGP (formerly EGB) member of a local Chapter is either a full time student; a new professional within five years of graduation; or 30 years of age or younger.

Green Building Champion

Leadership Award - Green Building Champion

The Green Building Champion Award recognizes deserving individuals or initiatives that demonstrates exceptional achievement in advocating for CaGBC's core interests, programs and priorities. This award is open to all persons in government, industry, institutions, Chapters, and CaGBC's Board of Directors (past members only) and may include work related to commercial enterprise, public interest programs, policies, education or advocacy that further advances sustainability in Canada.

Government Leadership

Leadership Award - Government Leadership

The Government Leadership Award recognizes a deserving individual, team, department or organization that has developed policies and/or programs to advance green building in Canada. The recipient has shown leadership in working within the public sector to effect change and improved performance in sustainable building practices, such as the adoption of a LEED policy for greening government buildings or the implementation of an innovative, sustainable infrastructure project.

Green Building Pioneer

Leadership Award - Green Building Pioneer

The Green Building Pioneer Award recognizes a deserving individual or organization who demonstrates an innovative approach to the advancement of green building technology, products, capacity building, policy, design or operations. As a result, their unique passion pushes the industry, their competitors, customers and employees towards continuous improvement ultimately helping the CaGBC achieve its ultimate goal of every building greener.

Technical Expertise Volunteer

Leadership Award - Technical Expertise Volunteer (not available for Ontario Awards)

The Technical Expertise Volunteer Leadership Award is presented to an individual who has generously dedicated considerable time and shared their expertise in an advisory capacity towards the advancement of LEED in Canada. As a member of one (or more) of the Council’s volunteer committees this individual is highly regarded as a subject matter expert and their contributions to the planning, review and execution of industry specific initiatives positively influence the productivity and effectiveness of the committee’s work. Committees may include: Technical Advisory Groups, Steering Committees, Building Lasting Change Program Committee, Product of the Year Jury, Greenest School in Canada Jury.

Chapter Volunteer

Leadership Award - Chapter Volunteer

The Chapter Volunteer Leadership Award recognizes a deserving individual who is an active and effective advocate for the green building industry, through significant involvement in creating, building and/or growing a CaGBC Chapter. They participate in and contribute to a variety of successful initiatives and are engaged in opportunities which focus on advocacy and advance the CaGBC’s mission in their region. As a highly-regarded leader and agent of change, this award honours their contributions and performance at the local level.

Green Building Excellence Awards

New Construction – Commercial or Institutional

Green Building Excellence -  New Construction or Commercial

The New Construction - Commercial award is presented to the team responsible for a new commercial or institutional (hospital, government building or academic institution) project which demonstrates optimal building performance and occupant satisfaction. Canadian new construction projects registered for, or certified by a recognized green building standard or rating system (including Core and Shell) are eligible. This award focuses on the design stage of the building and the choices made in order to achieve the sustainability goals. Completion date must be after Jan 1, 2016 (less than 2 years).

Existing Building – Commercial or Institutional

Green Building Excellence – Existing Building or Commercial

The Existing Buildings - Commercial award is presented to the team responsible for a commercial or institutional (hospital, government building or academic institution) project which demonstrates optimal building performance and occupant satisfaction. Canadian existing building projects registered for, or certified by a recognized green building standard or rating system are eligible. The project should demonstrate a commitment to sustainability with good practices in several key aspects. Completion date must be prior to Jan 1, 2016 (greater than 2 years).

Inspiring Home Award

Green Building Excellence – Inspiring Home Award

The Inspiring Home award is presented to the team responsible for outstanding achievements of a high-performing, sustainable residential project in Canada. The Inspiring Home award can be presented to: Homes (Single-family homes, duplexes and townhomes) or Multi-family Residential (Mid-Rise up to three stories 3 stories, High-Rise of four stories or more). The winning project demonstrates a healthy and sustainable living environment for people, contributes to the betterment of the community, and demonstrates a commitment to sustainability with best practices in a broad range of sustainability criteria. These awards are open to newly constructed residential projects completed between 2015 and 2017 (1-3 years old). Canadian new construction projects registered for, or certified by a recognized green building standard or rating system are eligible and must clearly show how they respond to all award performance categories.

Tenant Improvement

Green Building Excellence – Tenant Improvement

The Tenant Improvement award is presented to the team responsible for an outstanding interior space that embraces the philosophy that high-performing green spaces; create healthy, productive places to work; are less costly to operate and maintain; and have a reduced environmental footprint. This award focuses on the overall positive impact on the occupants' wellness. Project completed after Jan 1, 2016.

Zero Carbon

Zero Carbon (not available for Ontario Awards)

The Zero Carbon award is presented to the team responsible for a new or existing building that demonstrates climate leadership through optimal building performance and innovative carbon reduction strategies.

Criteria

Chapter Awards – currently open for nominations.

  • CaGBC Alberta Chapter Awards: Call for Nominations open until November 15, 2018.
  • CaGBC Ontario Awards: Call for Nominations open until August 31, 2018.
  • CaGBC Manitoba Chapter Awards: Call for Nominations are now closed.
Nominees must: be a member in good standing of a CaGBC Chapter; have demonstrated success in advancing green building (new or existing) and/or sustainable communities policies and practices in the region; not be current members of the CaGBC Board of Directors or the Chapter Board and/or have not been on the Board for at least two years from the time of the award presentation.


National CaGBC Awards – Call for Nominations now closed.

Nominees:

  • are either a Green Building Specialist or Advocate member company of the CaGBC or an Individual Member of a regional Chapter
  • have made a significant contribution to the CaGBC vision and mission,
  • have demonstrated success in advancing green building (new or existing) and/or sustainable communities policies and practices in Canada,
  • exemplify leadership and commitment to sustainability and actively advocate and/or are involved in changing current practices and approaches,
  • are not current members of the CaGBC Board of Directors and/or have not been on the Board for at least two years from the time of the award presentation,
  • are not current paid staff member at CaGBC or any CaGBC Chapters and/or have not been a paid staff member for at least two years from the time of the award presentation,
  • are well-known in the industry for their contributions,
  • can be repeat applicants but not award recipients from previous years.

National Awards Dinner and Celebration

May 29, 2019
6:00 p.m. - midnight

Celebrate the accomplishments of Canada's green building leaders. This is the perfect occasion to spend time with the who's who of green building in Canada.

  • Reception from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Gala Dinner and Awards from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
  • Gala Celebration from 9:30 p.m. until midnight

Registration:

One Gala ticket is included in each Building Lasting Change full delegate pass. Additional or individual tickets can be purchased. Corporate tables of 10 are available. Registration will open in January, 2019.
