Advisor, Energy Management

(1 year contract)
Ottawa, ON or Vancouver, BC

In this exciting new role, the Advisor, Energy Management is responsible for managing programs that accelerate building retrofits in Canada. This includes analyzing and interpreting energy and carbon data for the purpose of extracting key findings to be shared with the building industry. It also includes project management of a quality assurance tool for retrofits and an industry disclosure program: the Investor Confidence Project and the Disclosure Challenge respectively. The Advisor, Energy Management will work with the Advocacy and Market Development team to develop recommendations for government that contribute to the development of a mature retrofit economy.

This is an opportunity for an individual who possesses strong research and analytical skills, exceptional communication skills and a demonstrated ability to foster stakeholder relationships.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide energy management subject matter expertise to CaGBC departments and programs
  • Manage two different programs related to building energy performance: the CaGBC Disclosure Leadership Challenge and the Investor Confidence Project Early Adopters Program
  • Work with platforms such as Energy Star Portfolio Manager™, The Standard Energy Efficiency Data Platform™ and ARC to interpret and translate energy and carbon data for buildings
  • Foster collaborative relationships with building owners, energy management firms, utilities, engineering firms and financial institutions to strengthen their participation in CaGBC programs
  • Contribute to the creation of a data specification guide outlining how data must be provided by building owners and managers to facilitate analysis
  • Review select demand management programs and financial lending processes to determine how programs like the Investor Confidence Project can de-risk investments in retrofits
  • Analyze building energy and carbon data to discern key findings and trends and identify recommendations to improve building performance at scale
  • Lead the development of reports that summarize project findings and include case studies, survey data and secondary sources

Essential Qualifications

  • 3 - 5 years’ experience related to any of the following: energy audits, recommissioning and ASHRAE level 2
  • Experience conducting research and analysis on energy efficiency for the built environment
  • Completion of the Certified Energy Manager exam under the Canadian Institute for Energy Training considered an asset (equivalencies will be considered)
  • Post-secondary education in a related field (sustainability, engineering, energy management, facilities management); or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience developing business cases, detailed report writing, financial analyses, budget preparation and budget management
  • Demonstrated project management capability

  • Ability to interpret and integrate fairly complex technical information, contracts and service agreements
  • Ability to prepare and present information, motivate and influence others
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, understand and apply business analysis methods
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships
  • Strong communications skills both verbally and in writing
  • LEED AP is an asset
  • Bilingualism (French/English) preferred
  • Willing and able to travel
