LEED for Neighbourhood Development (LEED ND)
The USGBC has developed the LEED for Neighbourhood Development (LEED ND) rating system to guide and assess sustainable community development. The system was created as a partnership between the USGBC, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Congress for the New Urbanism. Registration opened in April 2010.
The CaGBC has been approached by industry leaders and local governments across the country to introduce LEED ND in Canada as soon as possible. The CaGBC hopes to introduce LEED Canada ND in 2011.
The USGBC conducted a LEED ND pilot, which opened in 2007 with nearly 240 projects participating. The LEED ND pilot is no longer open to new projects. A number of Canadian projects participated in the pilot and will inform the adaptation of the rating system in Canada. The CaGBC will not be conducting a separate Canadian LEED ND pilot.
Currently, Canadian LEED ND projects may register with the USGBC. Please note that once a project is registered with the USGBC, it is not advisable to transfer over to the CaGBC, as registration fees will have to be repaid. The USGBC requires all international (non-U.S.) projects to provide feedback, in the form of a questionnaire and interactive sessions.
Alternatively, Canadian LEED ND projects may choose to wait for LEED Canada ND to be released. Once the CaGBC has launched LEED Canada ND, all new Canadian LEED ND projects will be required to register with the CaGBC.
