Program Format

The CaGBC’s Sustainable Building Advisor program is flexible and customized for each region to ensure the education provided is current and relevant to regional geography and business opportunities. The course is structured over a nine-month period so that your current lifestyle and full-time work is not interrupted. It combines personal study time with just two days of group learning sessions.

This unique format provides an excellent interdisciplinary peer-to-peer learning environment, as well as a curriculum that includes presentations by Canadian expert instructors and guest speakers, hands on learning with site visits to exemplary regional projects, and access to the latest in green building resources. Students enhance their learning by completing written assignments and engaging in a team project. The nine-month program culminates with a final presentation based on the team project, a CSBA exam and a graduation celebration.

Best of all – you will become part of a local community and professional network of green building professionals with similar goals and ideals.  After graduation, SBA students can end up working together on projects, recommending each other for jobs, or even hiring each other.

Course highlights:

Interactive
Interactive class discussions and rigorous inquiry is integrated throughout the course. Participation is encouraged (and expected), in order to promote and enhance a cooperative and fun learning environment.

Expert Instruction
Local experts present both established ideas and the latest in sustainable design, construction, and operation techniques, with an emphasis on underlying theories and practical applications.

Hands-on Exercises
Each unit incorporates its work into an in-depth small group project, which reinforces technical concepts and develops competencies in applying LEED™, Living Building™, and other sustainable criteria to the built environment.

Field Trips
Site visits to local projects provide opportunities to test conceptual understanding.

Integrated Approach
Units are integrated to reinforce learning and provide familiarity with cross-disciplinary aspects of applied sustainability.

Cross-Sector Applicability
Content (including case studies and project-based exercises) addresses various types of construction (commercial, residential, renovation, and new) and development (greenfield, redevelopment).

Upon completion of the course and CSBA Exam, students earn the designation of Certified Sustainable Building Advisor (CSBA), which is a recognized green building professional certification across North America. LEED-accredited professionals will also earn 100 CE credits towards their credential maintenance, and Canadian architects will be awarded core Continuing Education Learning Units in many provinces.

Key information about LEED credential maintenance and core Continuing Education Learning Units for Canadian architects is as follows:

  • The Education Reviewing Body (ERB) of the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) has approved the SBA Program for 100 CE hours towards LEED Professional credential maintenance.
  • The SBA Program fulfills the LEED Green Associate exam eligibility criteria of an education program that addresses green building principles.
  • The USGBC Education Provider Program (EPP) has rated the SBA Program as a Level 400 (Mastery) Program.
  • Canadian Architects are awarded core Continuing Education Learning Units for their completion of the program.
