In the real world, can an affordable home be sustainable? The presentation will study a Habitat for Humanity duplex, registered as a LEED for Homes project targeting Platinum, which uses Building Information Modeling (BIM) to design precast concrete panels to create a high performance and durable envelope. Adding alternative energy sources to an efficient envelope creates a NetZero opportunity where the home generates as much energy as it consumes. The project involves Habitat for Humanity, Lafarge, Stantec, EcoAmmo, EcoSynergy and Vital
Engineering.
The Economics of Happiness
Mark Anielski, Anielski Management Inc.
This session explores the weighty topic of defining genuine wealth – the human, social, natural, built and financial capital assets that contribute to well-being, sustainability and, ultimately, happiness. Starting with an assumption that healthy entities have a strong sense of trust and belonging, healthy and vibrant dialogue, a diversity of human capital and a genuine appreciation for the value of nature, the speaker offers practical tools and processes for assessing, building and sustaining genuine wealth in communities, businesses,
governments and organizations.
Attendees will learn the differences between average Canadian houses and Passive Houses (PHs). The annual heating energy requirement for a PH is just 15 kWh/m2y, eight to 10 times less than a conventional Canadian home. PH construction uses radically improved building shell design and components to achieve dramatic decreases in building energy consumption. A PH doesn’t require a conventional heating system (a furnace) so these capital cost savings are used to offset the costs of the better-quality components and increased insulation levels,
making this approach economically attractive.
Hear how Austria is spearheading the European drive toward the design and construction of sustainable, energy-efficient buildings including Passive Houses (PHs) and Active Houses. With the construction industry, companies, architects and engineers working together, Austria boasts the largest per capita number of PHs worldwide, well on its way to meeting the European Union target to have all new homes built to near zero-energy standard by 2020. Canada was introduced to the Austrian initiatives at the Austria-Canada PH project during the 2010 Winter
Olympics.
Why aren’t green homes mainstream?
Cory Krygier, Jigsaw Homes
Are we telling the right story about the real value of green homes? Simply, green homes are better homes. This session will explore why we should frame discussions about the advantages of a green home holistically, focusing on how they offer a more responsible home that is healthier, requires lower ongoing maintenance, has lower operating costs, is more energy efficient and has a smaller environment footprint. With this focus, the weight of return-on-investment arguments won’t eclipse the true value of these homes.
This BIM (building information modeling) pecha kucha presentation will enlighten the true potentials of BIM's Current Practices and Emerging Trends locally and globally. The focus of this session talks about the past, present and future growing trends of BIM while exhibiting strong eminent ties between BIM and green buildings in a comprehensive manner for the audience. BIM, the current innovative methodology of any construction project delivery is growing in acceptance in all sectors of the design,
build industry, so come and learn how this session is going to further enhance participants knowledge base of GREEN BIM.
Going Green is Big Business – A Local Wal-Mart Story
Virginia Garbutt, Wal-Mart Canada, and Stephani Carter, EcoAmmo
How did the Wal-Mart Fresh Food Distribution Centre in Balzac become the shopping giant’s greenest distribution centre in Canada? Basically, a team inside Wal-Mart and out brainstormed many ideas – and implemented them all! Hear the inside story on initiatives implemented inside the building, within the Wal-Mart culture and incorporated into business. The centre has become a showpiece for other Wal-Mart centres and other companies. EcoAmmo, a team member, will share experiences helping the GO GREEN multi-national tell their green story,
educating staff at the centre and more.
In this fast-paced, informative, humorous and lively session, the audience will travel through the wonderful world of existing building projects using the LEED Rating System. The presentation will touch mainly on the interactions of implementing LEED on a project – from the contractor’s viewpoint. Presenters will review several projects, both completed and currently underway, to showcase the fun and follies in store for contractors. This includes the relationships among all project team members: owner, architect, consultants, sub-trades
and suppliers – and reviewing the actual and perceived responsibilities of what LEED means to each.
Can improved energy efficiency actually improve Alberta industries’ competitiveness in the global marketplace? The Energy Efficiency Assessment development project, funded by Productivity Alberta and Alberta Environment and with a focus on Small-Medium Enterprises (SMEs), was conducted in late 2010 to develop an incentive for goods-producing SMEs to undertake energy efficiency assessment and, later, implement energy efficiency projects. Interviews were held with energy efficiency program managers in several countries and with potential
industrial users. This session will outline the research results and recommendations for the incentive program.
This presentation paints the picture of our current energy use, how to maximize our resources in the short term – and how to leverage available technologies in future. Highlights include why our largest energy find in the short term is likely efficiency and how that can be achieved; how we can best leverage solar, CHP, wind and geothermal technologies; where a $10 trillion energy investment might take us; and what an integrated energy future that leverages district heating, tidal power, solar, wind, bio-fuels, CHP and geothermal might look
like.
Greenbuilding in the South Central US - From Revolution to BAU (business as usual) in Ten Short Years
Canadian Trade Commissioner/Dallas Laura Aune will present on the transformation of the South Central greenbuilding marketplace from exotic to essential led by the commercial and institutional segments. She will discuss current trends and opportunities arising from building code changes and increasing demand by tenants and owners in a dynamic, fast-growing region with 39 million people and 4 of the top 10 fastest-growing metro areas.
Greening Chicago
Chicago has a tradition of innovation
Chicago has a tradition of innovation in architecture from balloon-frame houses to steel skyscrapers to today’s green buildings. Chicago was one of the first cities to adopt the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification system and today Chicago has over 200 LEED certified and registered projects. Public and private institutions throughout the Chicago area have adopted sustainable building practices that make urban spaces more environmentally responsible. Taken together, these green building projects are helping to further Mayor
Daley’s efforts to make Chicago the greenest city in the nation.
Edmonton’s Green Building Plan
Presented by Mike Millross
When should municipalities step into the arena of sustainable building – and when should they simply step aside? Municipalities are being called upon to create a green-friendly environment in their communities, but how does that leadership role translate into action?

Keynote Presentation ZUGUNRUHE – The Inner Migration to Profound Environmental Change,
Jason F. McLennan
Just prior to periods of great migration, certain species display agitation and restlessness - a phenomenon referred to by scientists as ‘zugunruhe’. McLennan has identified a similar pattern emerging among people yearning for a sustainable future.
Jason will engage on how to find a more meaningful connection to the environmental movement. McLennan will remind us that individual efforts ripple outward and can lead to revolutionary change for the betterment of people and planet.
