The Canada Green Building Council is a not-for-profit, national organization that has been working since 2002 to advance green building and sustainable community development practices in Canada. The CaGBC is the license holder for the LEED green building rating system in Canada and supports the WELL Building Standard and GRESB (Green Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark) in Canada.
Together with our membership of over 1200 industry organizations and more than 1700 individual chapter members involved in designing, building and operating buildings, homes and communities, the Council has made excellent inroads toward achieving our mission of reducing the environmental impact of the built environment.
Acting as the voice of the green building industry, the CaGBC advocates for green building policies with all levels of governments and the private sector across Canada. The Council has also educated over 20,000 green professionals to answer the demand for knowledge and jobs this new green marketplace created. As a result of this advocacy, education and the hard work of our members, thousands of commercial and government buildings, schools, homes, community centres and historical structures have been retrofitted or newly constructed to green building standards.
As of 2015, these LEED buildings have eliminated 1,261,016 CO2e tonnes of GHG emissions annually, diverted over 1.5 million tonnes of waste from landfill, and saved 12.8 billion litres of water per year, benefiting all Canadians.
Yet, we all know that there is much more work to be done.
With buildings generating over 30 per cent of Canada's GHG emissions attributed to heating, cooling and lighting, and another 10-15 per cent embodied in building materials and products, green building is clearly an actionable solution that will help meet Canada's climate change commitments.
At the same time, green buildings are an economic driver. CaGBC’s 2016 Market Impacts of Green Building report demonstrates that through both direct and indirect benefits, green has a large impact on investment, job creation, and revenue for companies of all sizes across the extensive supply chain and through the entire lifecycle of projects.
That is why we are striving to make Every Building Greener. We believe that we must look beyond new buildings to the existing building stock, and beyond individual buildings to neighbourhood and community solutions. Leveraging the green building knowledge and expertise of our national membership network and Chapters, the CaGBC seeks to advance Canadian excellence in green building design, construction, manufacturing and innovation to further accelerate the market transition toward a greener economy and, at the same time, fight climate change.
With every building greener, one day every Canadian will have environmentally responsible, economically profitable and healthy places in which to live and work.
