As part of CaGBC's plan for a new integrated membership structure, all employees of a National member company (either a Green Building Specialist or Green Building Advocate) are now entitled to a free Chapter membership with the Canadian Chapter of their choice*.

This simplified approach to membership makes it easier for people to connect and engage with their local green building communities and others across Canada.

Effective January 1, 2016 our membership is divided into three categories:

  • Green Building Advocates (Companies or Organizations);
  • Green Building Specialists (Companies or Organizations);
  • Chapter Members (Individuals or employees of Advocate or Specialist member companies).

Membership supports CaGBC market research, education, advocacy and the ongoing services that members require to be successful and competitive in today's green building sector.

* This offer does not include Quebec at this time.

Green Building Advocate Green Building Specialist Chapter Member

Green Building Advocates are companies and organizations that actively support the green building industry and want to demonstrate their commitment through CaGBC membership. Usually, Advocates do not require access to LEED® benefits and are not building owners.

Advocates may include: Manufacturers, Retailers, Non-owner Tenants, Government Policy Departments, Utilities, Academic or Research Institutions, Industry Associations and other NGOs.

Green Building Specialists are companies and organizations that benefit from the LEED® green building rating system for their sustainability projects and help maintain the continuous improvement of this system through their CaGBC membership.

Specialists may include: Owners, Tenants, Landlords, Engineers, Architects, Designers, Developers, Contractors, Builders, Real Estate Brokers or Managers and Government.

Chapter members are individuals, not companies, who would like to be involved in the green building community at the local level.

Chapter members may be anyone interested in green building related to commercial, residential /homes, or neighbourhoods and communities including Emerging Green Builders *.

Green Building Specialist benefits include access to critical LEED information and professional services they need as well as eligibility for all other CaGBC membership benefits that help their employees maintain professional accreditations and industry engagement. Click here for rates.

Chapter Members fuel the grass root initiatives of Canada's green building communities. How to Join

Companies and Organizations:

Identify your company as either a Green Building Advocate or Green Building Specialist, then sign up based on your organization's annual revenue. If you are an existing CaGBC member and would like to confirm your membership category please contact us directly at info@cagbc.org.

Individuals

Effective January 2016: If you are an employee of a CaGBC Member company (Green Building Specialist or Green Building Advocate) your Chapter membership fee is complimentary. If you don't know the current status of your company's membership, please browse our list of current members here.

If you are not an employee of a CaGBC Member company, join here for just $100 a year and benefit from your Chapter network right away.

If your employer is no longer a Specialist or Advocate member of the CaGBC (i.e. their membership has lapsed) you will not be able to claim your free Chapter membership and will not have access to specialist or advocate member benefits. You can join your local Chapter as an individual or contact your company's membership administrator and ask them to renew.

Emerging Green Builders (EGB)

If you are a full-time student, a new professional within five years of graduation or 30 years of age or younger, you can join your local Chapter as an EGB for just $35. Join here to access all the benefits of membership. Proof of eligibility will be required. Valid ID includes: Birth certificate, valid driver's license, student card or graduation certificate.

Effective January 2016: If you are an EGB employed by a national member company, your Chapter membership fee is complimentary. If you don't know the current status of your company's membership, please browse our list of current members here.

Renewals

All CaGBC membership terms are anniversary-based.

Companies and Organizations:

Effective January 1, 2016 All employees of a National member company are entitled to a free Chapter membership with the Canadian Chapter of their choice. Upon renewal, your company will need to re-confirm your membership category (Specialist or Advocate) and verify your member roster to ensure you and your employees get the most value out of your membership with us.

Individuals and EGBs

If you are an employee of a national member company, when you claim your free Chapter membership your membership is valid for one year from that date.

If you are not employed by a national member company, there will be no changes to your renewal terms. Your membership is valid for one full year from the date of purchase.

Industry Engagement

  • Members gain exclusive access to CaGBC-led industry reports. (Advocates, Specialists and their employees)
  • Voting rights for LEED® balloting. Be part of industry decision making and have your say in the direction of LEED and green building in Canada by participating in the approval of new rating systems. (Advocates, Specialists and their employees)
  • Take a leadership role. The CaGBC National Board steers the direction of the council and the industry. Members have the opportunity to run for election to be a part of CaGBC's National Board, as well as nominating and electing other Board members. (Advocates and Specialists)

It's also an opportunity for members to build awareness by including your company's green building news in the newsletter. As an additional benefit, you will also receive a separate Education eNewsletter which outlines the latest CaGBC education offerings. Lastly, CaGBC members receive complimentary subscriptions to SAB Magazine, a leading trade and industry publication. (Advocates, Specialists and their employees)
  • LEED Technical Bulletin. Specialist members receive this valuable newsletter, distributed every second month as needed, which provides the latest news and information directly affecting those actively engaged in LEED projects. (Specialists and their employees)
  • Access to Credit Interpretation Requests (CIRs). Specialist members have access to the full online CIR database. Registered projects are able to submit formal CIR inquiries if they encounter difficulties applying a LEED prerequisite or credit to a specific project. (Specialists and their employees)

Recognition and Reach (for all Advocates, Specialists and their employees)

  • Exclusive use of CaGBC's member logo. The CaGBC brand resonates with our industry. Members can use the CaGBC's member logo on their website and promotional material, but please note that the CaGBC logo cannot be used to endorse products or services.
  • Know your industry. Our membership mirrors the diversity of our industry including architects, engineers and design firms, manufacturers, associations, developers, builders and governments from across Canada. Members have access to our full member list.
  • National and international exposure. Members receive a free basic listing in the Canada Builds Green Directory, our comprehensive online listing of Canada's foremost companies that provide green building products and services. Please note: CaGBC members get a free listing which includes their business address and phone number on our public directory site, which is added automatically upon registration or renewal. If you do not wish to have your information made publically available, please let us know.
  • Leadership Awards Member companies and individuals can be nominated for one of the CaGBC's eight leadership awards presented each June to members that exemplify the best of Canada's green building industry. Full details here.
  • Eligibility for Product of the Year Award. Members are eligible for this new award. A LEED Coach is a member of the CaGBC LEED team who can lead you through the LEED process and serve as a dedicated point of contact if you have questions along the way. Enhanced Service Package - $500. If your LEED project is particularly complex or if it is your organizations' first time registering and certifying a LEED project, you may decide your company requires an enhanced service package. This package includes five hours of dedicated guidance scheduled according to your needs.
